In discussions with many of our clients, it has become clear that there is a very expensive piece of equipment on virtually all of our aircraft that only a minority of us have ever been formally trained to use: the weather radar.
I took my initial weather radar course about 25 years ago in a Seattle classroom with Archie Trammell. For years, I used his cockpit reference handbook to maintain my radar knowledge and skills. Even the highly experienced RCAF pilots who mentored me in my corporate flying career were surprised at the things that we learned, commenting that clouds just don’t behave like the moving targets they had used radar to find
Since taking that first course, I have been honoured to get to know and work with Erik Eliel. Erik, with Archie Trammell, has produced both complete initial and recurrent radar courses for TrainingPort.net. Many of our clients have taken the Radar Recurrent, but discussion has revealed what I suspected: that we just don’t know what we haven’t been trained on…
We encourage our clients to consider signing up their flight departments for our Initial Radar course, which includes an excellent Cockpit Reference Handbook. This course is a one-time course designed to set up basic knowledge that cannot be reasonably covered in a recurrent course. Taking Initial Radar will then make the recurrent course much more meaningful. The initial course is 15 lessons and costs $800/person. You can sign up for it, risk free, here.
