In the US, Starting January 1, 2020, your aircraft must be equipped with ADS-B Out to fly in most controlled airspace.
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast is an automatic data link that provides transponder and other information through ground stations, satellites, and TO other properly equipped aircraft.
ADS-B is a surveillance system used by ATC that relies on aircraft broadcasting their identity, position, and other aircraft information.
