Safety Issues Addressed by the Business Aviation Community

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) hosted several important safety events at its recent Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (BACE) in Las Vegas from November 16-19. These events emphasized safety issues involving single-pilot operation and loss of control. Both of these are emphasis areas of the NBAA Safety Committee, the sponsor of these events, as well as various government regulatory authorities.

The Single Pilot Safety Standdown held the day before the convention emphasized issues surrounding loss of control in flight (LOC-I). Data was presented that show this as a leading cause of general and business aviation fatal accidents.

In fact, the root cause of many of these accidents is inadequate risk management by the pilot. Contributing factors include poor task and workload management, resulting in task saturation. Poor automation management is also a contributing factor is some fatal accidents. All of these skills are part of a broader skill set known as Single-Pilot Resource Management (SRM). A powerful video titled “Alone in the Cockpit” was presented at the standdown – recommended viewing for all pilots who fly these operations. Watch it here.

On the final day of the convention, the Safety Committee sponsored and conducted the National Safety Forum (NSF). This forum included several panels with business aviation leaders, government officials, corporate aviation officials, and others. The panelists discussed issues such as safety data sharing, fitness for duty, professionalism, procedural compliance, and airport and ground handling operations safety. These issues affect both single-pilot and two-pilot flight operations.

The NSF was the first event of its kind at an NBAA convention, and its success ensures that it will likely be held every year.

The safety issues addressed at these two events highlight the need for both single-pilot and two-pilot crews to stay up to date with safety trends and crucial pilot skills such as SRM and Crew Resource Management (CRM). This can be accomplished more efficiently if pilots can obtain and access convenient training courses that can be completed anywhere the pilot is located.
